Sorry for the inconvenience
In urban set-up, we tend to forget that river is a living ecosystem supporting biodiversity and providing various ecological services. In addition to providing water, some of the services of river include recharging aquifers, absorbing floods, providing fertile soil, forming highly fertile delta regions, habitat-provisioning for a variety of flora and fauna, supporting livelihood of local communities etc.
What is equally important is to understand river ecosystem as a part of a bigger system. System is always more than just a sum of its parts. River as a system interacts with other systems; exchanges matter and energy with them.
River is ours’ and it is a shared responsibility of authorities and citizens to keep it healthy. Unless we do our part, putting blame on authorities is plain escapism.
